Teen Killed by Train at Fernald Point was Santa Barbara High Student

On Thursday the name was released of the teenage boy who was struck by a passing Amtrak Pacific Surfline train near Fernald Point in Montecito.

Ryan Bradley Chapman, 15, of Santa Barbara, according to Raquel Zick of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Chapman was struck by the train and pronounced dead on the scene around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

According to scanner traffic, a group of teenagers were walking along the tracks towards a nearby birthday party.

Chapman was a student at Santa Barbara High School, Zick said.

The high school will be opening a “compassion center” for students and their families from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Alumni Room.


Fatal Collision: Train vs Pedestrian at Fernald Point

At 1:41 pm Wednesday, 911 received a call of a person struck by a train in the vicinity of 1795 Fernald Point Lane.

Responding units found a young male, not responsive or breathing, though a nurse was on site giving CPR.

One reporting party stated the victim appeared to be about 15 years old, and his mother was on site.

Sheriff’s requested a Chaplin. Victim was reported by Sheriff as deceased at 1:53 p.m.
